 报告内容简介：

Deep sea mining recovery is new technology which is getting more and more attention from industry, including ABS. This presentation introduces ABS and its overall organization. It covers ABS experience with exploration, drilling, and production of oil and gas from reservoirs under shallow and deep water.  This experience is extrapolated for recovery of minerals from under the sea. Mining under the sea is now expanding. Diamonds, gold, copper, nickel, and rare earth minerals are either currently extracted or are in advanced planning stage. This presentation covers the drivers for this expansion, design of subsea equipment, seafloor morphology, low or high temperature excursions depending on deposits, deepwater and high pressure, possible harsh met-ocean conditions, environmental sensitivity, designand manufacturing quality, equipment and component selection, vendor selection and management and challenges of retrieving equipment for repair and maintenance. It also touches on international agreements about subsea mining.

报告人简介：

Sudheer Chand completed his Cadetship on the Training Ship DUFFERIN, after which he joined a shipbuilding and repair yard for a three-year general apprenticeship. This led to a career at sea, culminating as a Chief Engineer on tankers. Sudheer then enrolled at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, obtaining a BSE in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering in 1977. In 1978, he joined ABS in New York as a Surveyor. He held various positions in Headquarters and overseas. Currently he serves as Director, Corporate Offshore Technology in Houston, Texas. Mr. Chand has served twice as the Branch Chairman of the Institute of Marine Engineers, UK (now renamed Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology) and has been elected a Fellow of the Institute, as well as a Fellow of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME), USA. He has been registered as a Professional Engineer in the State of Texas, and as a Chartered Engineer, UK. He is a First Class Engineer, UK Board of Trade (Unlimited Chief Engineer’s License). He has also served on various industry Committees such as ASTM/ANSI B31.1, and as President of the Marine Committee of NACE. He also served as a Liaison Member, National Academy of Sciences, Materials Advisory Board. Mr. Chand has published numerous technical papers on subjects ranging from intert gas systems to carriage of fruit and vegetables on ships, marine pollution, marine corrosion protection.  He has chaired or participated in many Conferences and Seminars, most recently at Deep Sea Mining Summit 2013, UK.
